ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With temperatures expected to fall into the 30s tonight, gardeners and growers are once again preparing for frost.

Deborah Genrich and Lauren Chamberlain, of Genrich’s Garden Center in Irondequoit, said they are careful to keep more sensitive plants indoors this time of year.

A frost a few weeks ago left some of their hydrangea varieties struggling, so they have been keeping an extra watch on the buds.

Genrich and Chamberlain also shared tips for homeowners looking to protect their gardens overnight.

“I think the biggest thing is not putting annuals outside,” Genrich said.

“Or, if you do, make sure you pull them into a garage, or into a sun porch or something, just overnight, and they can be brought back out in the morning,” Chamberlain added.

Chamberlain said many gardeners are eager to start planting, but it may be best to wait a little longer.

“People, I think, are getting that anxiety to start planting, and I feel like I’d give it another week or so before I’d say it’s safe to start doing annuals or veggies or even herbs outside,” Chamberlain said.

Genrich said gardeners can also lay down something light, such as newspaper, to help protect plants. However, she advised against using plastic, saying it could cause more damage if it is not removed quickly.
