I planted these together, fully expecting to have to divide the ferns eventually, but only one of my columbine plants has grown tall enough to get over the shade canopy of the ferns. Is this one tall boy a fluke or do I just need to be patient? I'm considering thinning out the ferns but I really love the look of all my columbines would get this tall. (Pittsburgh, PA – 6B)

No. They’ll get themselves sorted
I would plant columbine with something that comes up later, once the columbine is spent. The problem with the ferns is that they are early risers too.
Can the columbine move in front of the ferns?
The columbine is stretching for light. Move the columbine to a better location.
I saw another gardener on here (famous on this sub!) who raised the beds in the back/potted them and placed on top of a wall — so could still plan what she wanted but helped with this issue and it helped add more depth to the garden
Nah, just let it reseed in between them too!
