Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby will host a dedication ceremony on campus 21 of May at 2:00 p.m., honoring the lasting impact of former chemistry professor Bob Byrne, whose influence on students and environmental science education continues more than two decades after his retirement. This ceremony will take place at Byrne’s garden near the gym.
The event will celebrate a newly commissioned artwork created by artist Susan Burton, which was funded by Byrne’s family and friends as a tribute to his decades of service to the college and the surrounding community.
Byrne joined the faculty at IVCC in 1970 and taught chemistry for 31 years before retiring in 2001. During his tenure, he became known not only for his classroom instruction but also for his commitment to hands-on scientific learning.
One of his most enduring contributions was the initiation of the college’s annual river testing project. The program has allowed science students to collect and analyze water samples for more than 30 years, giving generations of learners real-world experience in environmental science and local ecosystem monitoring.
In addition to his academic work, Byrne was widely recognized for his enthusiasm, mentorship, and connection to students both inside and outside the classroom. His legacy has continued through programs and traditions that remain active at the college today.
The dedication ceremony will highlight both the new artwork and Byrne’s long-standing contributions to science education at the institution. College representatives, students, alumni, and community members are expected to attend.
