I would lay down brown paper all over the dirt and close to plants then top with about 4” of wheat straw unless you like weeding. Paper will decompose over winter faster than cardboard. The straw can be turned under like compost.
You have a good start. Now you just have to maintain it. Next year you will know what to do or not do. We all start this way with willpower to keep going and being stubborn.
