For the Killarney-Turtle Mountain Arts Council, the month of May is packed with lots of fun activities for folks who love to learn about new expressions of creativity, listen to our own Westman musical talent, and experience the beautiful paintings now on display at the Heritage Home for the Arts on Water Avenue.
Muses, oil paintings by Martine Bilodeau

This month the beautiful works of Martine Bilodeau will be featured at the Heritage Home’s gallery with 16 oil paintings. The exhibition is titled, ‘Muses’.
“This is one of the exhibitions that we have booked through Art Reaches Manitoba, known as ARM, which is a program run by the Manitoba Art Network. And Wow! it’s just really, really gorgeous,” shares art administrator, Giselle Beaupre.
Bilodeau hails from rural Quebec sharing her eye for art through her painting, photography, and illustration. Growing up in an isolated community, she often felt like an outsider, a perspective that shaped her creative voice. After building a 25-year career in the film industry, Bilodeau turned to visual art as a way to explore identity, resilience, and empowerment.
“And I can tell you that when you walk around the gallery, you feel little slices of that in all the different pieces as you look at them. They’re really, really gorgeous, and her use of colour and light just makes my heart sing,” says Beaupre. “It’s just really lovely!”
Convos with Connie

The Arts Council has started a special series called Convos with Connie, headed up by Killarney resident Connie Blixhavn, who has been instrumental in the beautification initiatives throughout the town of Killarney through the Communities in Bloom Committee.
Blixhavn is completing her Master Gardener certification, and with that she is putting in some volunteer hours at the arts centre.
“And so, to volunteer the knowledge that she’s learning, she’s running these little afternoons from about 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays,” explains Beaupre. “And she invites the public to come and join us and learn more about gardening. We’ve had anywhere from four people attend, to 9 people attend. And she brings a few samples and has conversations about gardening.”
“So, if anyone’s looking to share and learn – the conversation starts with whatever she’s prepared, but it always ends up being a big sharing thing. And everyone has either brought information to share but definitely left with lots of new information about their own gardening habits or tricks of the trade!”

Through the Performing Arts program, the Arts Council will be hosting their first Music on the Porch on Saturday, May 30th.
Heart’s Desire is a girl band out of Brandon known for their great vocals and harmonies, performing a mix of folk and country and a few pop classics.
“So just to make sure things don’t cool off too quickly, we’re going to start this show at 6:30 that evening and we’ve decided to go with free admission as well,” shares Beaupre. “So, it’s going to be a night of free music on Saturday May 30th right here where people can bring their lawn chairs and we’ll enjoy some really good music!”
The Heritage Home for the Arts is open Tuesday to Saturday 1-4pm.
