Hanging baskets are often used to showcase blooms outside properties or in gardens, bringing vibrancy to exterior areas. They’re straightforward to establish and maintain, as long as they’re properly watered and fed. This becomes particularly crucial as summer approaches, since they dehydrate rapidly.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advised gardeners to consider irrigation methods before planting begins. They stated: “Hanging baskets tend to dry out more quickly than other types of containers. Water can be easily wasted from them. If you have many baskets, you might want to consider using an automated watering system.”
If your hanging baskets are already planted and in place, it’s essential to inspect them daily.
Gardeners are encouraged to hydrate their baskets once or twice daily unless the soil is already moist.
Morning watering is recommended for optimal outcomes, before the sun causes excessive drying. Watering during evening hours is also an option, though it may draw particular pests, reports the Express.

The RHS noted: “Drying out is an increased risk as the plants grow and days remain warm and windy.
“An easy way to check whether they need water is to gently lift or nudge the baskets to gauge their weight. If they feel really light, they need watering.
“Try to avoid them drying out to the point where plants start to droop, but if they do wilt, you can place a bucket underneath to capture the water that runs off and return it to the basket.
“This will save water and soluble nutrients that are needed for flowering.”
Should the compost become excessively dry, rehydrating it can be challenging; aim to maintain a slight moisture level.
Watering until it drains from the basket’s base may flush out essential nutrients. The specialists recommend exercising caution during watering.
While hanging baskets can gain from periodic feeding, it’s crucial to hydrate them beforehand.
The horticultural experts noted: “Plant roots can be damaged by liquid feed that is not diluted correctly; always follow the instructions on the pack.”
Should your baskets endure through the summer months and into autumn, they’ll continue to require regular watering, so remember to monitor soil conditions.
