1) royal fern. This season it is poised to leap. Will it survive essentially being in full sun?
2) false indigo. One of my first plantings I put way too close together. Will it finally bloom in its third season?
3) redosier dogwood. This lone shrub is still hanging on. The heavy deer pressure keeps it from flourishing. Will it defeat the odds and hang on this season?
4) Queen of the Prarie. No, it’s not cannabis. It’s Queen of the prairie! Its first seasons it was constantly getting nibbled and never got the chance to grow leaves to build energy for an eventual bloom. Is this a leaf year or bloom year? Only time will tell.
5) wild ginger. My attempt at a woodland garden has mostly been a flop. Too much deer pressure and not enough shade. Will this blooming wild ginger be able to attract enough ants to reseed itself or will non native grasses overtake its habitat? Tune in next year for an update.

Please cage the redosier dogwood. It’ll be big enough to survive deer browse in as little as two years.
My Queen of the Prairie is triple the size it was last year. I’m so excited for it to bloom.
Lol, are we the same person? I’ve been taking photos of things that are about to bloom. Cirsium occidentale (cobweb thistle) bud below.
My false indigo finally bloomed this year, three years after planting. I had no idea what it was when it first started coming up because the stalks were so big. It is so beautiful and I’m going to plant many more as I eliminate more and more lawn.
