My wife made these cool planters, and I’m looking for advice on what to plant in them. There’s plenty of drainage, and they stand between 5 and 7 inches tall. Most of the openings lead into bigger shared segments, but some have their own sections. I’d really love to find succulents weird enough to complement the unusual planters, and I’d love to hear what this community thinks! Thanks!

I recommend sedum album. They form small, dense clusters with red and green leaves, and are more tolerant of wetter conditions than most succulents, making them more suited for pots with no drainage.

Anything you plant in the small holes will become an issue getting out later on, as the roots will expand. Maybe you can use those as propagation wells, but I wouldn’t suggest keeping anything rooted in those small ones.

Really, even the larger areas may be an issue. The roots tend to fill the space. So when you have a planter that has an odd shape, the roots fill all the space. And, then you’re left with trying to excavate the roots with or without the plant later on.

I say all this because the last thing you wanna do is accidentally damage these cool sculptures later on.

The smaller one will fare better, as the openings are more uniform.

Of course. If you just wanna plant and forget and see how they do for a long time, the world’s your oyster. I’d definitely recommend some small stacking sort of plants, and I’d try to stay within a genus for easier care. Small crassula, maybe sedum. Both of those genera have a lot of variety so you can go for different textures and shapes.

Succulents would work so well in these!
