We have a 100+ year old Norwegian Maple in our front yard. We’d like to eventually naturalize the yard and would like to start by leveling the mound behind the tree. I think its root flare looks good in the front but could we expose some more root flare at the back? If it may harm the tree, we won’t mess with it. We just want to know if we can level the mound a little bit and expose some root flare back there. Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. Yes, you can expose as much of it until you start finding roots. Any large roots you find should stay covered.

Just FYI a lot of Norway maples don’t live that long in the US and if it is actually 100+ years old it’s likely nearing the end of its life. They drop limbs fairly easily so be very cautious.
