Anyone know if American wisteria is better? Or just avoid it altogether?

I would avoid, plant Wisteria frutescens instead. That’s a less aggressive and native variety. Will need supplemental water more so than other natives. This is due to it largely being native to east Texas and a preference for part shade and more mesic climate typical to the eastern part of the state. You can likely take it back and say you meant to grab the American variety.
