Food prices, strange weather, supply concerns and another unpredictable growing season… it’s making more people think differently about food security.
In this video I’m sharing the things I’m buying NOW to help secure food at home this season — not to become fully self-sufficient, but to become a little less dependent on supermarkets and rising prices.Even small steps can make a huge difference.
Whether you have a garden, patio or just a few containers, this video is about practical preparedness and protecting your food supply before summer.

How will food situation in spring ? Hope good news !
Hi Ana. Thanks for your video, good information as always. Looks like you buy the same stuff as us from Home Bargains 😊 Like you, we bought lots of those pots last year, but I'm certain we only paid £1.99 each for them, just shows how much prices have increased in a year.
We are focusing hugely on our water storage at the moment too.
Yep, still cold at night and mid 10s in day time here in the SE. I sowed mine in the kitchen and they’re growing wild lol. Was going to plant them out mid May but seems like won’t be able to til at least end of May. Somehow my fruit trees are growing crazy this year as well. The fruits are way too big in May before I put fertiliser.
There weren't even any April showers. What are the chances, challenging growing conditions when we're on track for food shortages already.
If you can find the box of dried peas for mushy peas you can plant them, my mum used to use them every year for her fresh peas.
Thank you good points you make our weather up down I am this year mainly growing six veg in the north east our weather not stable enough to grow allso I can consecrate on them ❤
Thanks Ana. When I turn on the hot water tap I collect the cold water in a large bottle and use it for plants.
Me and my dad make stuff such as planters.
Thank you Ana, you are treasure.x
For fertiliser i chop down nettles put them in a bucket add water about halfway up, put a black bag over the top, leave at least a week. Then drain the liquid off, water it down as its very strong. You need a mask as it stinks to high heaven! 😊
This year I have the same experience as you with the birds and I also cover a lot.
I also have the experience this year that a lot of een the seeds don’t grow as good as in other years. Here in The Netherlands we hardly had rain, but a lot of sun and a very dry wind. I give a lot of water but it seems not enough.
Swiss chard does it really well this year and is versatile.
I have another tip. Buy organic snail/slug protection. This also keeps very well for several years.
Currently hanging up drying in one of my garden sheds. The leaves of the following,
Rosemary
Sage
Dandelion
Blackberry
Grape
Rainbow Swiss chard.
I had sticker shock this week. I was making a black bean burger from a mix. I decided I would like to order a couple more cans that usually ran about $17 each. However, when I went to order, one online store wanted $39 a can and the other $29. I decided to just order dry black beans and make them myself. I discovered they also had doubled in price! Formerly I believe they were about $1.50 a bag, but now they ranged from $2.50 to $3 a bag (1 lb). I fortunately found some canned for $1 a can in one store. It's starting to hit!
What a beautiful picture of you on your thumbnail ❤
My IBC tank is already running low believe it or not. I have animals that use it.
The weather is not great.
For compost you can make liquid compost by steeping comfrey or/& stinging nettles in a bin of water. You know when it's ready because it stinks!
Also for when acid compost is needed, make a tea with pine needles and use.
Learn to make your own fertiliser tea with your weeds. I have two big drums of it fermenting right now. It’s free and potent. Also you can make a tea with egg shells. Complete fertilisers for your garden for free.
Price of growbags are daylight robbery! I brought soil and pots instead of growbags.
Slugs are my problem. Anyone any ideas but not pellets.
I collect rainwater off
of our shed! When the rain barrel was almost full I filled up a plastic garbage can with rain water and also filled up 7 5 gallon pails that I am storing in the shed. This way the rain barrel can keep on filling up when it rains!
