Don’t be startled by the headline of this story. While it might be looking particularly dark and dreary as we write this, we aren’t about to start telling you about things coming up in the North East this Christmas.

We’re very much aware of the fact that we’re still in early May,, even though the fact we’ve considered putting the heating on this morning means it feels anything but! And it’s for that very reason that we bring you news of a place, that while particularly busy over the winter, thanks to its magical Santa experience, is well worth a trip in spring, summer or autumn too.

Long gone are the days that we’d just go to the garden centre for a few bags of soil, maybe a hanging basket or two and some plants for the garden. Now, if we get in our cars and head to our nearest or one that comes highly recommended, we are wanting a day out, or at least a few hours out of the house.

Thankfully there are plenty of centres in the North East that offer much more than flowers, wheelbarrows and patio furniture. Over the last few months we have been doing content on some of the best ones to check out in the area, like Lanchester garden centre, home to Potter’s World, a place where for just £5, you can spend the whole day exploring three differents zones – Potters Tropical Village, Potters Owl Adventures and Potters Play Tunnel; or Plantsplus, just minutes from Newcastle Airport, where you can enjoy a meal in its 5 star restaurant or pick up a ’10/10 cake.’

Last weekend, we told you about people kept coming back for more at Greenfingers in South Shields, thanks to the top Sunday dinners served up in its Potting Shed and, sticking with a food theme, now we turn our attention to Red Fox Garden World on the outskirts of Gateshead.

Every Christmas families flock to the centre, not far from The Green pub in Wardley, recently re-opened as Fitzgeralds, for its festive events, but if it’s somewhere near for a bite to eat you’re after, its Coffee Shop and restaurant is open all year round. You can fill your boots with dishes like a Full English breakfast, Eggs Benedict, cod and chips, scampi and chips, corned beef and potato pie and homemade quiche.

While those are only served Monday-Saturday, don’t rule out a trip to Red Fox on a Sunday, as that is when its delicious roasts are served up, with a choice of beef, pork and chicken with all the trimmings for £12.99 for a small or £14.99 for a large. And if you’re feeling refined, you can also head to Red Fox for a spot of Afternoon Tea.
