I would put two beautiful trees that are moderately narrow but tall. One on each side. Would look stunning.

Do you have sprinklers or irrigation? Looks very sunny if you don’t have sprinklers maybe something like purslane that doesn’t require much water?

Tall canopy up against the sidewalk to bring the height down and create a ceiling. Rhododendrons on the foundation. Terrace it down. Include a small seating area someone in the middle elevation near the corner of the lot. Like what a porch would provide

The upper flat area would get two native trees that get very large. The slope would get some medium size native shrubs at the top and native flowers on the lower slope. You will want to plant things pretty dense to help hold the slope.

    Once sunny grass covered slope

Be sure to set trees well back – like 8 feet or more from the walk way. 4 feet or more for shrubs. People tend to plant right on top of the walk, failing to account for the mature size of plants

I would hire a professional that can give a solid recommendation based on your area, watering capacity, sun exposure, etc. if it’s sunny plant some evergreens, boxwoods or Dwarf Mugo pine, if it’s shady plant yews perhaps but it really depends on what you’re looking for.

I absolutely would not put trees there even if they’re ornamental, the spot you’ve chosen is too close to the sidewalk for trees. No offense to RUaGayFish.

I would try to terrace the yard to fix the steep angles which will cause you issues when you have the mow. Then on the terraces you could plant some nice trees and flowering shrubs.

Simple and clean don’t break the bank. 3/4 crushed rock and minimal plants aka triples, mini sago etc. drip system but simple so maintenance is low

This is kind of a reach but you could cut into the hill for some garden beds and add more retaining walls if you want a drastic change. Just make sure the drainage is proper. You could fence in the top so no one falls. Each row could be a different set of plants or shrubs. You might even be able to cut out a small little patio /hang out area… just throwing that out there, but obviously it would cost more.

I would do mulch beds with some shrubs
Don’t do tons of shrubs or plants
    Pick something low maintenance

I’d do twin trees on either side and some ground cover for the slope

A fence! That way you can take your time to figure out what you want back there

  12. TotallyTardigrade

I would terrace it and fill it with flowers and some vine veggies

Two squat rectangular prism columns made out of brick with light fixtures on top. A mailbox next to that.

You have a corner lot with a lot of unusable real estate, if I were you, I will put wrap around porch with tiered garden to create useable space to enjoy morning coffee and an amazing entrance. I know you came to landscaping, but I think the blend of a deck and landscaping will really make your house pop. Also given your location, reset the street level row of retaining wall and add French drain.

Join the native plant thread, drop your zone/sun and moisture and ppl will love helping!

Put in a really good quality railing on both sides of the steps. The one there has seen better days.

Just lawn on the flat part.

Replace the street trees if possible. Choose smaller ones that are native if possible.

I’d plant a prairie on the slope to hold the soil up and honor your location. Don’t know where you live. But if the growing zone works I would recommend Lilacs, Hydrangeas, Rhododendrons. Plant and Evergreen on the far upper left that will grow very tall and hide the telephone pole.

I would plant natives along the slope and hold off on anything that is too much of a commitment or expense until you’ve lived in the house for a bit. Unless you’re swimming in cash, then same advice as all the top comments.
