May is known to be the last official month of spring, which often means that temperatures are heating up as summer comes closer, and gardens are starting to wake up and bloom after the long winter.
This time of year also marks a busy period for gardeners, whether professional or amateur, as plants start to grow while it’s also time to get started on sowing any new plants you want to enjoy over the next few months. On top of this, grass lawns will also need some attention, whether it’s to trim it down, or making sure it stays healthy and green.
To help, a gardener named Ish Kamran has shared his simple three step guide on how you can make sure your lawn stays green and healthy all summer long, which includes doing one task this month.
“Want a perfect lawn like I’ve got here? Well, I’ll show you just how easy it is in three steps,” Ish said at the start of his TikTok video.
He then went on to explain the three steps, and how to complete them.

1. Prep the grass
“We’re gonna start off with prep work, and that’s getting the ground ready and getting rid of the pesky moss,” Ish said.
To do this, Ish used lawn tonic with iron sulfate, which he mixed into a watering can before adding it all over your lawn, before leaving it for a few days to do its work, with Ish saying it will help the moss ‘turn to crisp’.
When this is done, you can move over to the second step.
2. Scarify the lawn
Next up, Ish ercommends to scarify the lawn, either by using an electric lawn scarifyer, or with a rake.
Scarifying is a deep-cleaning, mechanical process that removes thatch (dead moss and grass) from your lawn to improve water, air, and nutrient access to the soil, promoting healthier, denser growth. This is best done in spring, from late March to early May, or in autumn, between September and October.
He also recommends introducing air into your lawn, either with the tool you use to scarify the lawn, or with a simple garden fork, although this might take a bit longer.

3. Overseed the lawn
“Once you’ve successfully butchered your lawn, you can now focus on overseeding it, espceially where there’s bald spatches, where the weed and moss were,” Ish said, explaining you can even get a special kind of seed for the shady parts of your garden.
He then recommends leaving your lawn to grow for four to six weeks, making sure you’re keeping it hydrated. Once done, you can then introduce a green feed or fertiliser.
“Do this every couple of months or so, and your lawn will absolutely thrive,” Ish explained. “And if you’re particularly lazy, do this in the rain, you don’t have to water it in then.”
Once these three steps are done, you will be able to enjoy your perfect looking and happy lawn all summer long.
