May is widely recognised as spring’s final official month, which typically signals rising temperatures as summer approaches, with gardens beginning to awaken and flourish following the lengthy winter period.

This season also represents a particularly hectic time for gardeners, both experienced and novice alike, as plants begin their growth cycle while it’s also the ideal moment to start sowing any new varieties you’d like to enjoy throughout the coming months.

Additionally, grass lawns will require some care and attention, whether that involves cutting them back or ensuring they remain vibrantly green and healthy.

To assist with this, a gardener called Ish Kamran has revealed his straightforward three-step method for maintaining a green and healthy lawn throughout the entire summer, which involves completing one particular job this month.

“Want a perfect lawn like I’ve got here? Well, I’ll show you just how easy it is in three steps,” Ish said at the start of his TikTok video.

He subsequently outlined the three stages and explained how to carry them out.

1. Prep the grassContent cannot be displayed without consent

“We’re gonna start off with prep work, and that’s getting the ground ready and getting rid of the pesky moss,” Ish said.

To achieve this, Ish applied lawn tonic containing iron sulfate, which he diluted in a watering can before distributing it across the entire lawn, then allowing it several days to take effect, with Ish noting it will cause the moss to ‘turn to crisp’.

Once this is completed, you can proceed to the second stage.

2. Scarify the lawn

Next, Ish recommends scarifying the lawn, either using an electric lawn scarifier or a rake.

Scarifying is a thorough, mechanical process that eliminates thatch (dead moss and grass) from your lawn to enhance water, air and nutrient penetration into the soil, encouraging healthier, denser growth. This is ideally carried out in spring, from late March to early May, or during autumn, between September and October.

He also suggests aerating your lawn, either with the same tool used for scarifying, or with a basic garden fork, though this may take slightly longer.

3. Overseed the lawn

“Once you’ve successfully butchered your lawn, you can now focus on overseeding it, especially where there’s bald patches, where the weed and moss were,” Ish said, adding that you can even source a specialist seed variety for the shadier areas of your garden.

He then advises leaving your lawn to grow for four to six weeks, ensuring it remains well-watered throughout. After this period, you can introduce a green feed or fertiliser.

“Do this every couple of months or so, and your lawn will absolutely thrive,” Ish explained. “And if you’re particularly lazy, do this in the rain, you don’t have to water it in then.”

Once these three steps are completed, you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy a pristine, healthy lawn throughout the summer months.
