Any ideas what’s causing these series of holes in this tree? I’ve only heard woodpeckers a handful of times in the 16 years I’ve lived here in upstate SC
Any ideas? They seem to be in semi-uniform lines, and each hole is about the size of a pencil eraser head.
There are probably 8 lines of holes all up and down the tree trunk.
If it’s a woodpecker then that probably means that it hears bugs inside the tree

Sapsucker, likely Yellow Bellied Sapsucker.
Healthy trees rarely suffer permanent damage other than some scarring.
They make these wells not only to access the sugary sap but to also attract bugs which they eat. Other wildlife use these wells, such as songbirds (both resident and migratory), hummingbirds, pollinators and even mammals. It can be a valuable source of food for many critters.
