Scott’s spreader got me

The good news is that you didn’t burn it, so you could put on more and even it out a little.

Unless you have >5,000 SF, the Scott’s hand held manual whirler spreader does just fine. Yes, you have to fill it up a few times, but it just takes a minute, is much cheaper, and I think provides a better spread. Also much easier to change from very light to very heavy application, which you can adjust by walking speed, too.

What really got you is not enough fertilizer

Bad spread pattern is the real culprit here

Welcome to the club. I tried the wheels mod and it was marginally better. I got an Echo RB60 and the Scott’s going in retirement.

I have used it for 3 yrs. I run it on 3.25 or so, & I do 3 passes criss-cross & 1 diagonal. I brush the tray & feed mechanism, but no more. Basically walking faster launches it further & finer, plus spreading less at once works pretty well. I use the bag that cover 5k sqft, & my front yard is 4k sqft.

Sorry, newbie here. Are you rinsing off your spreader after you’re done and allowing to dry?

I read a post the other day just railing on the Scott’s spreaders, and I have never once had an issue with mine.

Looks okay to me. I don’t think there is any reason to panic.

I put a aluminum pie plate on the interior of the wheels. Seems much better.

A hand spreader is all you need for lawns under 1/4 acre

I just throw with my hand. Works better.

I just use a handheld spreader. My lawn’s about the same size as yours. Push spreader feels like overkill.

Were you drunk when you put this down? I’ve seen worse but it looks like you had a plan than got distracted for a piss break or refill halfway through

You have not seen the grass growing in the nuked yard of mine lmao. Just strips of Bermuda, thankfully it’ll fill in but until then it’s just comical.

  15. The key is always a good spread. Spread wide, steady and overlap as needed. A wide spread pattern ensures that any heavy areas will blend in more naturally and likely wont even be noticeable. Don’t move slowly. Moving slowly will not give you a better application if using a human powered gravity spreader. Set your rate and speed and keep moving. If you feel like you need to fert heavier because your spreader doesn’t put out enough fert for your pace, then just reapply in the same pattern. There is no need for cris crossing and zig zagging and cross walking and all that. You just need to move briskly and ensure that your fertilizer is flying sideways and not just being pushed out then dropping with a significant arch.
