This is my new lily, I planted 30 a month and a half ago and only 1 came up. I proudly showed my husband and he said, “oh shit, that’s not a weed?” He’s been weeding them and feeling proud that he was able to “get the big root bulb out too”

Oooohhhhh that’s so sad. And now I feel better about my husband never helping me garden

Im not laughing at you… But funny story. My mom asked my dad to start the weeding. He did. When my mom came out to see, she asked about one of her plants. He said, oh you mean the one that had the all huge pink bulbs on it? I pulled that out last weekend.

    He’d dug up her peonies.

  4. Uh oh. Hubby is going to be pushing up daisies of his own.

How are people completely functionally illiterate?

  6. Dodie4153

Haha, accidental, or did he just get a free pass on any more yard work?

I think I’m going to ban mine from the yard for carelessness with the mower. Like sir, get away from my flowers.

One year I had a day off work and bought lily bulbs for a little 2’x3’ bed near our garage. I cleaned it out and planted them and was so happy when they started to come up! One day my husband was trying to teach me how to use the weed eater and mowed them all down in one swipe. He looked at me with such a huge smile while I stared at him open mouthed.

We still talk about that to this day, and I still refuse to use the weed eater.

Why I give very specific instructions to my non-plant person husband. To the point where I will send pictures. He once weed whipped tomato plants.

One time my mom was visiting family and asked someone to take care of her poppies. My dad got offended and said he can do it, when she came back all the poppies rotted and drowned. 🫢

I had friends who moved into our house and dug up my asparagus plants when they were bolting thinking they were weeds and that they were helping

    😭 5+ years just GONE.

How sharp was the breath you needed to collect yourself?

My husband was trimming and pulling weeds in the garden bed. He said, “I couldn’t get that tall one though, it’s really stuck in there. Do you want me to cut it down?”
    Me: “What tall one?”
Him: “The one in the back corner. It’s almost two feet tall, and the stem is really thick. We probably should have got it sooner.”
Me: “That’s a lily! Leave it alone!”

Anyway… Your husband isn’t the only one. 😆 And mine is a well established plant, he still tried to pull it!

My mother sent my stepfather outside to get some onions for the chicken salad. When they became very sick, she asked him where he got the onions. He dug up daffodils! I had to question my mother too, she’s a country girl and knows what an onion should look like.

I would cry. This is like the time my husband pulled my voodoo lily because he thought it was a weed in the pot. I was so sad. Needless to say this year he didn’t pull it and she just bloomed.

This is one of the things that makes me the only one allowed to do anything in my planters. My husband knocked down all the milkweed I was so excited about when he was weedeating. Now we talk before he does anything having to do with plants and weeds.

I have one lily because the picture looked so cool but I’m allergic, so I just planted the one in an area I don’t use much. It comes back every year but I’ve never seen it bloom because the deer eat it right before it opens. Except this year, they already ate it and the flower hadn’t even started to form yet. I keep meaning to put something up to protect it but I never remember.

I once threw out a mango seed my dad was planting (mangoes are pretty exotic here) since it genuinely smelled like a rotten chicken idk why..

Sounds like you need to plant more.

You will need a hole about 7 ft long, 3 ft wide, 6 ft deep.

  19. Iwaspromisedcookies

This is why I don’t let anyone help in the garden

Oh no! I feel you on this. My partner and I garden together ever since he mowed over my flowers at the start of the season last year. They luckily recovered, but now he knows what every single one looks like and he doesn’t go anywhere near them with the mower.

Having traumatic flashbacks to when my husband weed wacked all my milkweed.

When I was a kid my Granny left me alone playing under the oak tree. I dug up “onions” and was chopping them with a rock to pretend to “cook.”

So anyway, those tulips or whatever they were supposed to be never did come up.

  23. cutecatsandkittens

That’s why non gardening family member’s don’t touch my garden.

    I thought I was in r/mildlyinfuriating at first 😅

this is another post that should be under r/mildlyinfuriating

  26. lucky_719

This is why husband no touchy my garden unless explicitly asked for help

I know this pain. I planted some native asters that would bloom later in the summer (all the other flowers tended to bloom in early spring). They were growing so well until the day I came home to find them laying on the front steps. Mom was so proud that she had spent all day weeding the flower bed so my asters had room to come up.

My husband weed whacked a new plant last year and I was devastated. I put a little cage around the leftover nub and kept it there through the winter and into spring. This long term caging has apparently kept the shame alive in his mind and before he mowed this season, he asked me to give him a walkthrough of the yard.

    So when’s the funeral?

  30. something_beautiful9

Uhg. I had just planted a full butterfly garden only to have my mom come by and weed every last one. For years thought I sucked at getting flowers from seed. Nope. Damn woman just kept pulling them up.
