    That is mold.

    I would look up local pet stores and find one selling springtails. Even if you already have them, get more. Buy a culture or two, then use a spoon to dig in the dirt and peel some back, and dump as many springtails as you can straight down in there. Also get some isopods, which help break down larger bits of bio waste.

    Mold is generally a GOOD SIGN, it means the mold is breaking down decaying matter. But too much can overwhelm and outcompete plants. Springtails eat mold and decaying matter.

    Between microfauna, mold cultures, and plants, you have a mini ecosystem, completing the bioactive cycle.
