Brisbane drag star Beverly Kills has showcased her home garden in a profile on ABC’s flagship comfort show Gardening Australia, and we love to see it.

The Brisbane performer featured in last week’s episode of the long-running program, hosted by Costa Georgiadis.

By night, Reece Jackson is Beverly Kills, who was both the youngest and the first Queensland queen to appear on Drag Race Down Under, on the show’s second season.

But by day, the 24-year-old is a plant gay and amateur gardener. The Brisbane drag artist told Gardening Australia about Beverly’s origin story and the home garden on the balcony of their Brisbane high-rise.

“When I was 17, I went through a breakup. It definitely really hit me emotionally, and I needed a way to get my feelings out,” Reece told the ABC program.

“Drag just sort of fell into my lap almost. And I guess Beverly Kills was born… Beverly Kills is everything I was not allowed to be before.

“I’m originally from the Gold Coast, so I’m very comfortable around the beaches, the water, the estuaries.

“Now that I live a very metro urban life, gardening has sort of been my escape, my new thing that has allowed me to relax.

“My life is just so chaotic and colourful and quick, and it’s the only time I can bring the speed all the way back, and it’s incredibly therapeutic.”

Reece said that “gardening is the only time where I forget that time is moving” and has some things in common with drag.

“The biggest parallel I see between being a drag performer and gardening is sort of that constant, ongoing development,” the performer says.

“Nothing’s ever fully done. Nothing is ever finished. I almost don’t believe in art that’s fully finished.

“I’ve never finished a costume and been like, that’s it, no more rhinestones. I will constantly change that costume.

“I will add more rhinestones. I’ll add a glove. I’ll change the wig. My garden is the exact same.”
