I bought this cherry blossom tree from a nursery a while ago. It’s looked like this for a couple of months and I was wondering if I should be concerned about it?

  1. Where are you? It’s coming on to winter and cherry trees are deciduous, so they do lose their leaves now. Mine are basically bare sticks already.

Not sure what you’ve done so far but first thing I’d do is clear some mulch from around the trunk and give it a deep soak

Yes, it is dying – you should be concerned – but doubtful you will be – cherry blossoms do not survive in ROCKS!

Very little air will be getting to the root ball with rocks around it.

You can try to save it – can’t get much worse right? And it’s pretty low effort. Clear some of the bark mulch away to expose whatever kind of dirt is under it and give it a really good drink of water. Stand there, flood that sucker. Wait for it to absorb. Flood it again. Make sure that waters getting into the ground. Get a sprinkler or soaker hose or something, run it super low so you’ve got a trickle and go have a cuppa. Do some laundry. Jigsaw puzzle if that’s your thing. Set a timer though cos we don’t wanna forget and flood the neighbours. Unless you do. Whatever.

Do that a few times over the next week, preferably in the morning so it doesn’t sit all wet and get a fungus or rot.

Worst case scenario you need to replace it next season, but at least you’ll remember that the roots need water.

Whats your soil like? I added Morpheus from Red Soil Organics and it helped my food forest so much.

Do you have weed mat around it? If so remove it. Anything around the plant will stop water going through including things like mulch.
