Through a side picket gate, a compact garden room holds shade and semi-shade plantings: a white-blooming climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) on a north wall, five colors of astilbe, three colors of coneflowers, multiple ferns, multicolored heuchera, little pink Allium, peonies (Paeonia), azaleas (Rhododendron) and purple iris. Annuals were added such as lantana, marigolds (Tagetes) and gaillardia, to extend color into summer, while a chocolate vine (Akebia quinata “Shirobana”) climbs a tall arbor near the entrance to the backyard.

A Chinese fringe tree (Chionanthus retusus) is located around the pool area, and Atlas cedars (Cedrus atlantica), purple-leaf smoketrees (Cotinus) and boxwood create an edge of plantings at the pool. The back garden includes low lighting and three fountains. A new koi pond with two waterfalls and Missouri stone forms what the club describes as an oasis for visitors.
