Got this guy a year ago for free in a red solo cup. Big plans, thinking of planting on our property when we were done renting. Life and the economy happened. We cannot be done renting soon enough for this guy to grow out of his pot. Do I plant him in a random ditch? Is that legal? Do I plant him at an enemy's house? Where do I put this tree so I don't have to throw him out?

Definitely plant this in your enemy’s yard.
Dreams can be delayed, and so can planting this guy.
Just get a bigger pot and keep that dream alive! It’ll be fine as long as you keep it outside. Feel free to shoot me a message if you want advice on winter storage.

As long as it isn’t a sweet gum I say enjoy the fall colors. Sweet gums can meet the fire pit.
My parents had many, many maples in many, many pots for many, many years. Most eventually got planted. Most of those actually look just like regular healthy trees.
Maples are hardy. Take him with you or plant him somewhere whimsical. He’ll be just fine either way.
