My neighbour is tearing down their house and I decided to try and save this maple. I know that the best practice is to plant a maple just below the root flare but to my surprise, as I started digging I realised that the tree was planted more than 1' above the flare (where the green arrow is in the first picture). It's been like this for years and it's done well. Should I replant it properly at the root flare or should I bury it to where it's been at all these years? Not sure if there's such a thing as a tree getting "accustomed" to a certain soil height.

I would let is sit in some muddy sludge, like soil and water. If you haven’t played it yet but yes right above the root flare so they can still breathe
