I bought this massive Philodendron selloum(?) for a great deal on clearance today! Checked it for pests and got it home, then repotted it in a mix of orchid bark, organic potting mix, perlite, and a little worm casting and peat. I bought her pretty dried up, so I let her get some rain after repotting.

I do have a couple questions about it though:

  1. Would a shaded North facing balcony in summer be sufficient, or would I have better luck substituting with grow lights inside year round? I have almost all my houseplants under lights, and could arrange an area for her easily with some extras if it would be enough.

  2. She has a bunch of new growth at the bottom, should I trim back the unhealthier leaves so she can focus on the new?

  3. Have I ID’d this plant correctly?? It doesn’t seem to be the small variety lol

Thanks in advance!

I’d say that it’s a P. Hope, the smaller more compact version of what used to be Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum which was formerly P. Salloum, only because it’s not showing the tell tail “trunk” or “tree form”. Your medium mix sounds good, and if you can keep inside and not have to acclimate it to go out and possibly come back in when the seasons change imo it’s just better for the plant because it reduces stress and light variations, but that’s totally a personal choice since there’s really nothing concrete in plant care other than they need light and water and proper temperatures to survive, lol Edit: There’s also the issue of pest management if you were to keep it outside, more likely to get and or bring in pests if moved in and out. Looks very similar to my Philodendron bipinnatifidum ‘Hope’ (also known as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum or Selloum Hope).

She’s thriving in around 200-300 PPFD grow light and when outdoor temps stay above 60°, she will live under a south facing gazebo on our backyard patio along with other large tropical plants.

Pictured in the middle of my favorite corner setup.🤗

Potting Mix and peat? I think she would be happier in something with way more drainage. I know you said you had the other Amendments but it looks wayyyy to dense and might rot your roots. Especially with the added peat moss to the already peat moss baised potting mix.

Coco coir, Coco chips, Horticultural Charcoal, CHUNKY PERLITE, Worm Castings and a slow release organic fertilizer is all you need. Try growing without peat moss. It’ll change your life.
