Local grocery store was selling these massive nepenthes… Miranda? I’m relatively new to carnivorous plants and they were unlabeled, so if you can tell from my pictures I would also love to know.

I saw these weird cut looking spots where the meristem should be. I decided to get it anyway just in case, since they were going fast for $20.

Was it cut? If it is, can it continue growing from that little nub next to it? Why would they even do that? What’s my prognosis there- would it survive, or would the old leaves die off until the plant dies since it’s not making new leaves?

Footnote: That will not be his permanent home, it will be somewhere way more humid and bright. I just needed to put it somewhere away from the cats when I got home from the store.

No worries, it will be totally fine!

Someone decided to take a top cutting for themselves, either a shopper or employee likely. The little nub is a dormant node activating and in a month or two it will be the new active lead. They’re pretty tough plants so it’s not a big deal but it means you’ll have to wait a little extra time to see new pitchers.

They would have pruned it to keep it compact. The plant is fine.
