Sen. Josh Mallard’s proposal to extend Wichita State’s community garden has been tabled until the next Student Senate meeting on August 19.

Mallard originally proposed the resolution on April 29, which proposes expanding the community garden to the flower beds at Wallace Hall. A resolution is only a recommendation from the Senate, and taking over the beds would require approval from the university.

Mallard said that after speaking with the facilities department, he learned that the expansion would require a fence to be built. With the current flower beds raised above the ground, the fence would be needed in case someone fell.

Mallard proposed that the senate table the legislation to have more conversations with Director of Facilities Planning Emily Patterson and an architect over the summer, to see what steps they must take in order to make an expansion safe.

“So more conversations about essentially making it ADA compliant and ensuring safety,” Mallard said. “I also mentioned a little bit about collaboration between departments. So just fully starting more conversations into that to see what other departments would want with the garden space.”
