Front Range residents can start planting their gardens as the Denver area has likely seen its last snow and freeze of the season.

DENVER — It’s time to plant!

The reassurance comes as many Front Range residents have been asking whether the Denver area has seen its last snow and freeze of the season.

According to the 9NEWS Weather Impact Team meteorologist Chris Bianchi, the short answer is: yes.

“I would put it at about a 90% confidence interval that we’ve had our last snow and our last hard freeze of the season,” Bianchi said, adding the caveat that no forecast is guaranteed. “I’m not a deity, I’m not a god. I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen in a week or two.”

Historically, Denver’s average last measurable snowfall falls in the final week of April, while the average last freeze is May 5 and the average last hard freeze is April 20 — all dates that have now passed.

Looking ahead in Denver, the 10-to-14-day forecast shows no signs of freezing temperatures, pushing the outlook into the third week of May, Bianchi said. While rare late-season snow events have occurred as late as the final week of May.

For gardeners with especially tender vegetation, waiting one additional week is advised as a precaution. For everyone else, Bianchi said you can put away those snow shovels and you can plant that garden.
