Hey philodendron people, I got my first melanochrysum after a long deliberation- when I bought it six weeks ago it already had a new leaf ready to unroll. Six weeks later and it’s still completely closed. I keep all my philodendron at around 60% humidity and have never had a problem with leaves not unfolding. It has a wet cloth sitting in water on top to boost the humidity even more- is that normal, what else can you recommend?

it’s not a humidity issue, and get that cloth tf away. i just top chopped mine for 1st time and it’s doing wonderfully at 60% RH. always has.

what’s the temperature? just as important as RH….how do you water? use ferts?

LOTS of missing info here, to even begin to guess, really…

what’s your ppfd at the leaf surface, (get the ‘photone’ app) and have you treated preventatively for mites, etc.? a low level mite presence can cause emergence ‘issues’, ime.

Also looks like its in terracotta. I find terracotta and a super chunky soil mix to be a lil too dry for these finicky babes

For tropical plants like philodendrons, plastic containers are better. I am going to guess that it’s partly transplant shock. You brought it home and repotted it while it was also trying to produce a leaf. So now it’s trying to also get settled into a new pot and a new environment. Outside of putting it in a plastic container I think patience is key.
