After temperatures fluctuated throughout April, planting season for home gardens has arrived.
Several places throughout the Midcoast region offer discounts on seedlings this time of year, from small farms to nonprofits like the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust. Seed sales typically start in late April and run through late May.
Whether you’re building out your home garden or just getting into growing food and plants, here are the local seedling sales you won’t want to miss.
Villageside Farm
Location: 122 Belfast Road, Freedom
The organic seedling sale for Villageside Farm in Freedom began on April 21, but it isn’t too late to pick up your favorite vegetable or fruit, as the sale lasts until June 19. Villageside Farm boasts a massive selection of vegetables, fruits, annual and perennial herbs, and of course flowers for upcoming Mother’s Day.
The farm plants its 3- to 4-inch seedlings in biodegradable pots and tests most varieties to ensure they perform well in Maine’s climate. Gardeners can sign up for Villageside’s email newsletter to receive seedling updates and other farm news.
Sound Pine Farm
Location: 47 Pennellville Road, Brunswick
This Brunswick-based Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) nestled at the mouth of Middle Bay Cove is holding a plant sale on May 16 and 17. There will be over 30 new varieties of seedlings and a new tote bag, with the proceeds going to the farm’s Share Support Fund. The fund covers the cost of a share for families who need extra help.
Gardeners interested in what Sound Pine Farm offers can sign up on the farm’s plant sale page online and find out more information about the farm’s 20-week Free-Choice Vegetable Share. A $50 minimum is required for seedling orders due to the amount of work required to put together the orders.
The farm’s plant sale page handles all seed orders, offering a mixture of vegetables, annual and perennial flowers, tomatoes and culinary and medicinal herbs.
Farthest Field Farm
Location: 3 Prout Road, Freeport
The local farm’s growing practices focus on rebuilding soil and habitat using organic methods to rebuild soil health. Farthest Field Farm uses organic seed for its seedlings, which are available in an upcoming seedling sale during Memorial Day weekend on May 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Preorders are available online in the lead-up to the seed sale with a wide selection of cabbage, rosemary, thyme, cucumbers, basil and many other varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust
Location: Tom Settlemire Community Garden, Maurice Drive, Brunswick
The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust’s annual Taking Root Plant Sale is scheduled for May 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature native pollinators and plants, with the proceeds going directly to support the community garden.
Unlike in past years, the land trust is not accepting donated plants for the 2026 sale because of the rise of invasive jumping worms in Maine.
Dandelion Spring Farm and The Hive
Location: 961 Ridge Road, Bowdoinham
This year, Dandelion Spring Farm challenges gardeners to deepen their relationships with herbs that have served as the background to some of our favorite culinary dishes. For those interested in venturing out to scenic Bowdoinham, Dandelion Farm is holding a plant sale on May 30 and 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The farm requires a minimum order of $30, which customers can preorder online or purchase on-site.
Dandelion Spring Farm intentionally sells plants in the small to medium stage of their seedling lives, so they are ready for planting. The farm also offers payment plans through the Klarna app if gardeners want a buy-now, pay-later option.
