Hi

I have this apple tree, came back from holidays to this. (Pic attached).
Looking for recommendations to save the tree?

TIA

Is the white stuff a type of insect?

    I think it’s a wooly apple aphid?

Wooly aphids. Common on apple trees. You can blast them off with a hose or use a horticultural oil to kill them. Just keep in mind their fluff stops a lot of the oil from getting to the insect so you really have to drench them

It’s wooly aphids, they suck the sap and will affect the health of the tree if left to spread. one of the side effects is unattractive lumps along the branches and trunk.

Short-term, get out with a hose and spray them off with a jet of water.

Let it dry and then spray the affected areas with horticultural/neem oil and pyrethrum. Keep up treatments until they’re gone.

In winter trim off the thin damaged branches. This tree needs the centre growth removed and shaped so you’ve got better chance of fruiting. Research techniques for that, this shouldn’t be too much work to get it right.
