Moisture is key. Like a wet sponge that doesn’t drip when sqeezed.
Leaves and cardboard like to dry out when exposed to air. Try and bury the outside layer when and if you turn it. You can use the stuff breaking down to cover the fresher material.
I’ve had pieces of cardboard last the year because it keeps drying in the sun.
