My daughter wanted a lavender plant so we potted a seed. It looks good and healthy but after 6 months, this is all the bigger it is. It’s been this size for a long time now. Is this normal?

lol, good luck. They’re pretty hard to start from seed. Lots and lots of direct sun seems to be the key. 2 I planted last year finally look decent today.

Don’t give up on it! I had a lavender from seed that I planted in the ground years ago. I was convinced it was never going to thrive because it was so tiny. Year two it blew up like crazy and now it’s huge!

It’s actually adorable. Please never give up on it!

I would continue to care for its amazing already that is germinated from seed as lavender is finicky

Its sooooo cute!!! Its growing a healthy root system. Make sure it gets plenty of sun, and protect the pot from freezing solid in winter.

I planted lavender from seed last year, it blew up when I started neglecting it. Seriously lol. I made sure the soil is very well draining and I only watered when it looked suuuuper dry. You might have just watered it in the picture but the soil looks too wet. Also put it in full sun 6-8+ hours!

The pot is huge for such a tiny plant. All the growth is happening below the surface! Don’t disturb it and you may have a nice size plant some day.

It just needs a single tiny bumblebee on it 🥺🐝

That is the cutest little plant baby I’ve ever seen, maybe it’s going to grow in pace with your daughter.

I transplanted two last year and apparently they are goners. Good luck!

At least your seeds germinated! A win is a win imo. I’ve tried growing munstead lavender from seed and miserably failed

So this is normal? I tried growing lavender from seed, and the stuff just takes for absolutely ever to do anything.

Year 1 they sleep, year 2 they creep, year 3 they leap! Just be patient, this little guy looks great!

That tracks. Be proud! That’s a lot farther than most and I don’t even know your zone.

Welcome to Lavender. Your heart will be broken again and again and you will love it.

This made me lol. It’s so cute though. Lavender is sloooooow growing but, you’re right, it looks healthy. Based on my very limited experience successfully growing one lavender plant, 6 months is nothing.

It likes well lean well draining, sandy soil and to be on the dry side. 💜

Sleep, creep, leap. Applies to most perennials. You might be expecting growth like common herb or vegetable annuals – but those only have one season to live.

    * First year: barely any growth.
    * Second year: some growth but you’re probably thinking why did I plant this. It looks stupid and tiny in it’s space.
    * Third year: oh Lord why is it so big and why did I not plan better for this.

Did you mix in perlite into your soil? Last summer when my lavender thrived, I planted it in 1:1 soil & perlite and basically just waited for the soil to look dry before watering sparingly. Also read it didn’t like fertile soil so didn’t put any fertilizer. It bloomed beautifully but then old man winter killed it 🥲

This is exactly what’s happened to me growing lavender from seed. Year 1, it was tiny. Neglected it/left it outside over the winter (zone 9a) and year 2 it blew up.

I started another couple seeds early spring last year to replace the original lavender that I assumed wasn’t going to make it, and same thing is happening with them… hardly any growth last year and now growing significantly faster.

    Patience pays off!
If your daughter wants a satisfying grow to hold her over in the meantime, bush beans are notoriously easy and quick!

I’ve had issues with herbs lately also, definitely fickle

Easier to grow lavender from cuttings. Just steal a non flowering sprig or two from a friend or neighbour.

I have the same problem with an artichoke that hasn’t grown for months, similar size pot as you. I finally dug it up and moved it to a smaller pot yesterday, the roots looked ok but the soil seemed a bit wet. So I’d try downsizing if I were you.

Ironically I have 5 lavender that I started from seed in jan that are so big now! Steps i took: 1. cold period in fridge for a few weeks. 2. all germinated seeds together in one pot under growlight. 3. Repotted to individual pots with sand mixed in when they got bigger.
