Hey all! Pic for attention only, not OC. We are going to try to grow Dahlias this year in Maine. My wife and I fell in love with them last year when my brother was growing them. He’s going to give us seeds or tubers this year after this year, but I need help in picking varieties to start on our own that look good.
Plus we are always looking for general growing setups and ideas! Any help is appreciated!! Can’t wait to post pics of the outcome when we get there!
P.S. – Is there a chart or photo that shows blooms and their names somewhere? Buried on this sub maybe?

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:
When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!
*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).
If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.
If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

You may already know this, but if you grow from seed they won’t be true to the variety they’re from, but a random hybrid (usually a single flower that isn’t that exciting). I’m growing some from seed this year because it’s fun but just in case you weren’t aware. Tubers or cuttings/other clones will be the same variety it’s from though.
I’ve had great results growing in containers because you avoid a lot of the “getting eaten by creatures” issues people report and you can micro-manage the soil medium.
There are too many varieties of dahlia to even get started but one kind I wish I’d known about my first year growing them is the Collarette type – they have a row of outer petals, and an inner row of usually contrasting petals. I’m growing Wowie, Bumble Rumble, and April Heather of this type. Good luck with your dahlia project!
If there’s a dahlia society near you, go check out one of their shows. I make my yearly wish list based off what I see there.
