I moved into this new build in 2023, and this Live Oak (I think) looked green and healthy (pic attached), but three years later it’s barely grown and is lacking leaves. Is it giving up? What can I do to help? It has a bubbler at the bottom of it, and we’ve watered it a lot, to the point that last summer the trunk/bark started to swell up where the water was hitting the trunk.

  1. I see that it had a massive mulch volcano but in the newer pictures the root flare still doesn’t look exposed.

On the watering you might have rotted the trunk. You should never ever see the trunk be swelling up. The watering should be in the root zone, not against the trunk.

Watering should be done deeply and infrequently. Think 1 hr drip system once per week in the summer and less in the other seasons.

Depending on the species of live oak they dont need a lot of water. Especially after being established
