yeah it has no chlorophyll and needed the other cactus for life support. I suppose you could try re-grafting to new root stock

If you have another cactus for a rootstock you can attempt to graft to save it.

Cactus grafting is significantly easier than most other plants and more forgiving. A tight, clean cut held tightly is the hardest part.

Without grafting? Yes, but not the way you think. You can keep alive in a sterile medium like agar where you feed it everything it needs, so it can live without photosynthesis. They still need light for photomorphogenesis, but they don’t need chlorophyll for that. Without any light, it will grow etiolated.

You can replace photosynthesis with sugar. Honestly just regular sugar from your pantry. You will also need MS medium for nutrition and plant growth regulators to induce rooting. You would essentially have to prepare an agar base with sugar, nutrients (ms medium) and growth regulators, add it to a glass or plastic container that can be closed like a jar and sterilized. Then you would need to sterilize your plant with a solution of bleach, rinse it well, cut the bottom off with sterile blade, and then set it firmly in the container of agar. Everything needs to be sterile because even the smallest contaminant with ruin it.

Your plant can live like that for years. You would need to occasionally transfer it into fresh agar to replenish its energy and nutrient reserves.

    Other than that, no.
