Probably better for it than repeatedly getting hit with a mower and introducing a terminal fungus

I’d buy half a dozen bags of topsoil and build up the ground until it’s flush with the roots.

  3. Nope but now you know how large to make the mulch circle!

Add some native flowers (require no watering once established) and you’ll have some nice landscaping!

As someone who has a good amount of experience doing root pruning, I have to first ask: How are you defining “hurt.”

Hurt simply means damage or harm. Cutting any living thing on a try by definition will harm the tree.

Think of a papercut. It frickin hurts. But does it matter?

So how are you defining “harm?”

Why can a bonsai tree easily handle severe root pruning, yet an established tree like this ends up dying?

Prune along the edge of the mulch ring and the tree will be fine.

Those are some major stabilizing roots. What’s on the other side of the tree from this? I’d only cut them if I didn’t care if the tree came down in the next windstorm.
