Here we have an updated image of the ongoing struggle I have with a neighbor who simply could not give a shit about his home’s exterior appearance. I try my best to hold back the onslaught of aggressive weeds and wild grasses. When he mows, seeds and seed pods are distributed everywhere — including across a very narrow 18-inch “demilitarized buffer zone”which I have slowly created. Does this not seem unfair? What ever happened to Texas hospitality?

Sucks most you can do is offer to mow it.

  2. Eastern-Hamster-5050

Oh wow, howdy neighbor. Didn’t expect to see my yard posted on Reddit.

  3. KrossIn4K

Ask the neighbor if you can take care of it for him, not your responsibility but it’s a solution. The other options are report it and see if anything changes. (doubtful)

Can’t imagine what the inside of their house looks like

Suddenly an hoa doesn’t sound so bad

  6. Magma86

If you live within “City Limits” call code enforcement

  7. Krispyford

I would mow that one day when the neighbor wasn’t home. Not his whole yard, but that strip for sure.

  8. _Berzeker_

Dang. Imagine living with a problem for six years that would have taken less than an hour to fix.

  9. IMHO_grim

Call code enforcement. Most places have a strict height rule, that will be over all of them I’m sure.

If they don’t take care of it, the city will and send a bill in return.

Shit like this reduces property values, and considering homes are people’s largest single investment, that’s not gonna fly.

  10. Neigbour posting the opposite over at r/fucklawns trying to grown weeds for pollinators lol

I have a neighbor just like this. When we bought the house other neighbors told us it had been like that for the 3 previous years too. Call the city and tell them you’re worried about it providing a habitat for mice and snakes. They hit ours with a notice last year and he hired a landscaper to mow. This year he’s back to not giving a shit and I’m weighing calling the city again.

Put some gnarly weed & grass killer on his shit lol.

If you’re in Texas, this is almost certainly in an HOA. Do they not care about this?

  14. No_Alps7854

Theres a bunch of people in my towns fb group that would support this over how you feel about it. Throw some wild flower seeds all over their lawn so it coukd look a little better

  15. GotHeem16

I assume you’re in a HOA? Fines should be handed out

  16. Comprehensive_Baby53

I’m surprised the HOA isn’t getting involved. Its times like these your thankful to have an HOA if they aren’t tyrannical like some. I’m lucky to have a good one with low fees.

  17. Necessary_Echo8740

Tbh, I like the “wild” look, but only when weeds are taken care of, and of course when it’s respectful of neighbors. Done correctly, it can be a very low maintenance lawn that only needs a few trims here and there with some selective herbicide. But yeah, this guy ain’t doin that lol

  18. Scnewbie08

His wife left him, I would just mow it for him till he gets back on his feet.

  19. TESLATURKEY

Maybe he’s a member of r/NoLawns and is going for the natural look that benefits local bees and pollenators?

  20. I had a neighbor where the property manager would t take care of things. Eventually, I started to mow more on the border and eventually treat the worst weeds. The neighbor appreciated it, and the next tenant took care better.

Hopefully you enjoy lawn care enough to be on a lawncare reddit and want to be a good neighbor. Assuming the neighbor isn’t an @ss, help mow or treat it for him. Maybe he could use the help.

  21. KarmaKeeper91

Honestly ask him if u can take care of that section for him, it may work

  22. smackaroonial90

In the right corner we have r/lawncare, spending hours and hours and hundreds of dollars curating his lawn to perfection. And in the left corner we have r/nolawns who is a master of not caring what other people think and having a yard that helps local wildlife. Who will win? This battle behemoth has been at a standstill for 6 years!

  23. Rare-Maintenance4820

A line of nice shrubs? Could you put in a narrow bed for flowers as a buffer?

  24. aiglecrap

I mean from the looks of it their exterior looks great.

  25. shift013

Genuinely, is the neighbor fine? Do they have anyone come by? Do they go out and about? Are they horribly depressed and mentally okay? Offering to mow once every two weeks may take a hair more time for you and may genuinely make him feel so happy and like someone even cares a little

  26. Arch_Rebel

When you pay that mortgage you can cut it however you want.

  27. ThisAppHates1A

I had a neighbor like this and I know I’ll get many people who say I’m stupid for this but I would cut their front yard so I didn’t have to look at it. It only took a few minutes and it was done but i couldn’t stand to look at it. I’ve done it again this year twice since they lost their home and the bank doesn’t do very good at lawn service while it’s being auctioned off.

Side note. I got a good laugh at the 18 inch demilitarized zone 🤣🤣

  28. cautioussidekick

Oh I’m one of those neighbours that are terrible with their lawn when work ramps up. Fence for sure

  29. Basic_Department_302

Might not be a popular opinion, but I like the wildflower/weeds and natural gas your neighbour has more than your artificial lawn. No offence intended, just a different perspective
