I have been slowly working a large cypress down to a trunk with a little foliage. My plan is to carve a large portion of the trunk into deadwood, but I’m struggling to imagine how the flat/scale like needle foliage will turn more bushy and which branches I should start trying to shape. If anyone takes a look and has a cool vision for the tree I’d love to hear it.
First photo is my tree, second is rough inspiration. There is a little more nebari than what is seen in the photo here, but I will uncover when I do my repot into inorganic soil

No clue which branches but I approve of the Diet Coke. Following.
It has a beautiful base, but please do not do any branch selection at this point. Let it recover from the work you did. There’s barely any foliage, you don’t wanna kill it.
