Today marks the 1 year anniversary of me sticking this thing in the water 😠the offshoot that has leaves has grown since I got it, and the original vine slowly lost all its leaves. It's been decaying from the bottom up slowly but surely and has never attempted to put out any roots.
Things I've tried:
– adding pothos cuttings (lasted a few months, all rooted and got potted)
– using water from my aquarium
– using RO water
– putting it in the sun
– keeping it under artificial light
– cutting the decay off, letting it scab, and then putting it back in the water (done maybe 5 or 6 times)
Is it a lost cause?

Two months or so on a begonia maculata 😂 took ages
I also had one of those in water FOREVER.. i got tired and just put it in soil without any roots.. a week later it had gotten some good roots going.. now i just skip putting this in water and just go straight for putting stuff in soil and then keeping it moist
Big peperomia green-bean plant. It broke off someone’s & they gave it to me. Tall fairly mature with 3 arms like a trident. Didn’t know what i was doing back then so i stuck in stones to hold it upright & filled with water. I figured it would either root or look pretty for a week or so on the window sill.
Months and months go by, doesn’t die but doesn’t root either. Finally started to sluff off a layer of skin (not slimy style) and there were tiny nubs at every place s leaf had been. More months, no change. I finally gave up and potted it.
I moved shortly after and have all plants to my mom. I believe it survived.
Monstera Peru. Took ELEVEN MONTHS.
By month 4 I had compartmentalized it as Schrödinger’s Cutting: it was both working on rooting and never going to root.
Try commercially sold rooting hormone powder, then if the leaves are gone, just “sphag n bag” it. A chonk can live for ages in moist sphagnum.
