Hello! This is my first time posting here, so I hope I’m doing this right. These guys have been growing like crazy in my garden for years now. Though I’m not much of a botanist, so I figured I would consult more knowledgeable people before I try to pluck one of these out of the ground and eat it.

(Edit): Thank you guys so much for all the information, it’s greatly appreciated!! I’m definitely gonna use these guys to make all sorts of yummy stuff now! Also, I wasn’t expecting to get much attention on this post at all, especially this fast lol. You all are super helpful and I’m super grateful :-D!! Much love!

Yes, they’re nasturtiums! One of my favorite flowers…I grow them every year, but I’ve never gotten enough seeds to make capers.

I’ve eaten many and these appear to be the real thing and you mentioned they’ve been perennials. A cousin to nasturtium that has similar growth habit and is edible is Mashua (***Tropaeolum tuberosum).***

Definitely edible nasturtium, and when they go, they go! They have a nice spicy taste, love them. Be sure to check the backside of the leaves before putting it in your mouth. Little critters love them too 🧘🏻

  4. Why is everyone eating these now a days? What do they taste like?

I can 100% confirm that is nasturium. Or I guess it could be a dangerous look alike that I am totally unaware of.

Lucky you! Where I live, nasturtiums inevitably attract seemingly every black aphid within 500 miles.

    Definitely nasturtiums! Enjoy

Yes. I love to add the flowers to my tea

  10. Bite off the pointy bit at the back of the flower. Suck like a straw and get a tiny bit of nectar. You’re welcome.

I love Nasturtium. I planted them the first time last year and my god theyre great companion flowers. Look lovely, attracted all the aphids and saved my veg. And they’re coming back through this year as they’ve self-seeded.

I wasn’t keen on the taste, but I’m going to try and pickle some of the seeds this year and see how I get on.
