First Pic today, 2nd Pic 1 week ago. Third is a closeup. I trunk chopped this tree (I think Siberian elm) that self planted in my planter and I collected a month ago. Should I start to select branches and start to wire after the branches harden off or too soon? Or let it grow and leave alone? Zone 7b Washington DC USA.

I think too early. My rule is that when the thickness of the branch equal the diameter of the head of a chopstick or it turns old browish then you can start wiring . Dont try to bend green one unless you really sure what you are doing.

Beware Siberian elm has a tendency to drop branches, usually ones that are important for your design. Have you decided on a style?

  3. Wire yes. Branch selection I wouldn’t say so. You can even pinch the buds you don’t want
