I’ve never grown peonies before (I’m a die hard dahlia fan and just do a million varieties of them every year) but we’ve moved and are now seeing what plants are appearing in our new garden. turns out we have a gorgeous peony! I’ve hurriedly stuck some bamboo canes around it to support it as we had no idea it was going to get so big and gorgeous – will support it properly next year. any other must know tips or tricks to ensure it continues to live long and prosper? should I definitely cut fully back to the ground in autumn? I’ve googled but figured I’d ask here too. thanks 🌺

Beautiful. It will die back completely in winter no need to cut it back. Just tidy away the dead leaves.
You could get a frame to hold them up a bit longer. I have the same variety but don’t feel the need for the frame for mine.
They do grow well. I was given part of one by my grandmother 5 years ago and it’s now dotted around my garden in 6 places.
Enjoy!
If you mulch your garden borders, avoid mulching over where the Peony grows. The crown of the plant needs to be at the surface or very shallow for them to flower well. They don’t like to be planted too deep.
I love that vase !! Where did you get it ?
I have the same peony in my garden, also inherited when we moved here! It was a lovely surprise as we moved in winter time. Like yours, mine seems well established so I don’t do a lot. When it’s really dry I have watered it with some general fertiliser mixed in but it’s very resilient in my (limited) experience.
Once it’s all done for the season and the foliage starts to wilt, I personally do cut it right back to the ground because it starts to look a bit manky after a while. Last year it went all brown and spotty. I put a hoop around mine this year to support the heavy flowers from dropping onto the ground – like you I also had no idea how big it was going to get at first. 😆 Enjoy your lovely flowers!!
