Each Spring, as gardens re-emerge from winter, Coastal Garden Club members walk their property, identify plants to dig up and divide to propagate for the annual plant sale. In addition, plants for the sale are started from seed and carefully nurtured for months leading up to the sale.
This annual fundraising event which has been held since the Club was founded in 1998, helps to support the Foundation of Brunswick Community College scholarship program in addition to the many other club activities that benefit our community throughout the year. Plants that are raised by experienced club members and that have thrived in the local coastal climate generally realize great success when planted in their new gardens.
This year the plant sale will be held during the Market-Fest at Riverwalk, at 158 Wall St. in downtown Shallotte on. Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sale will feature native plants, annuals, seedlings, perennials, hanging baskets and container gardens all raised, planted and nurtured by members.
The Coastal Garden Club operates as a nonprofit organization under section 501©3 and is a member of the Garden Club of North Carolina (www.gardenclubofnc.org), celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Membership in a garden club is a great way to learn about home gardening, floral design and to promote the study of better horticultural practices while advocation civic beautification, preservation of native habitats and conservation of natural resources.
