The pictures are for my post I made about a hour ago “Meat Birds Randomly Dying”. Keep in mind that the picture of the birds are from after I chucked them into the woods.

I think this setup for meat chickens is actually fantastic! It seems live you’ve done most everything right

Sorry for the losses, tbh I might just cull early so you can still harvest some meat.

My experience has been that the survival rate depends on what hatchery they are from, under the same growing conditions. I believe the strain is important

My apologies for your losses and I hope it’s okay to ask do you have plans for your chicken tractor? As I looked at your pictures they seem very well made and I’m thinking of building some.

Looks a bit small for 40 6 week old birds. I would have probably went with 16 x 8.

Your set up looks pretty nice! What temperatures are you having?

Unfortunately I have found the Cornish cross to be very delicate birds, especially close to harvest. We had some warmer days and I realized they wouldn’t seek out shade, so I made their whole run shaded, for instance. They have an instinct to pile which is of course the worst thing to do in the heat. They also won’t move out of the rain. I had a dozen drown in only a few inches of water. It was all really sad and I felt horrible that I didn’t know just how careful I had to be after 30 years of raising other chickens.

You can also try only offering them food 12 hours a day. It can slow their growth a little. But, honestly, with the losses you’ve experienced this week, I would just butcher asap and hope for the best.

Eta: I saw in comments that your weather hasn’t been too bad. So, yeah, I’d probably just butcher as soon as you can.

  6. That’s because they stuff themselves silly and are forced to have horrid genetics that make their bodies grow faster than their skeletons allow. Reduce their feed, they’re eating grass and bugs too.

As others have said, limit the food. 12 hr with, 12 hr without. I feel your pain. The last batch of those that I did, lost 3. One of them was the night before butcher. Its soo frustrating. Unfortunately due to my schedule, im not always able to achieve the 12 on 12 off. Im assuming thats why I lost them.

  8. Sometimes, it just happens. I went 20
Years, maybe two deaths day two-ish. Last year I lost 6 at 6 weeks. I don’t think it’s anything you did, it’s just the breed.
