Bought my home 6 years ago with this basketball court. My kids are now adults so this is just taking up space that I would like to reclaim. I don’t want to contract someone, so what’s the best method?

  1. rent a small machine and break it up, lift into truck or bin for disposal.

probably a job worth hiring out.

Asphalt breaks up pretty easily when you pry under it. Get a San Angelo bar/tamping bar to get under it at the edge and go nuts.

It’s a brute force job with a pick axe, or a sledgehammer, or jackhammer….. Or you get a small excavator to come in and bust it up.

I know you don’t want to contract it, but you should get some quotes. If you want to save some money you can see if they will break it up and you handle getting to the dumpster you will need. However I’m not sure that will save much money. A good excavator can probably complete the job really fast.

Considering diesel prices I’d go the jackhammer route. You can DIY that with a rental or contract it out.

If you are dead set against those options you could get a masonry bit and drill a crazy number of holes and break it up that way. I think would be an exceedingly tedious method but maybe that’s what you want.

Last but not least… Plan on that having a significant gravel base. That has to go if you want grass and your looking at a job that is begging for an excavator.

jackhammer easiest, or get a pinch point bar and jab it in, pry it up and toss it away piece by piece.

Mini skid steer might do it if it’s not laid down too thick

What’s your address?! Let’s get a game running!!!

With the aggression I have recently looking for work after getting laid off on Aprils fools day, I would enjoy taking shots at this if it was mine. But yeah, busting it up is the “easiest” part , if you do it yourself you will also have to deal with hauling it yourself. Just call/ask around local contractors and get quotes my friend.

Looks like a great spot for a shed or a pergola. Sure remove the hoop, but I’m sure there’s something you could use it for.

I did 3 times that size with hand hoe “mattock hand hoe” from Walmart. Took about an hour

If it’s anything like my driveway just put a ton of snow salt on it and let it sit for 6 months… lol

Would building something on top of (at least part of) it be worthwhile? Like a shed.

In my area that can’t go to landfill, but the asphalt makers happily take it back and recycle it. Environmental liability alone I would hire someone.

    Raised bed garden area?

Just crank it out either way. It is either hard or cheap. Not both

keep it for the grandkids. enjoy a fire on it and look back at all the memories your family had

Put astroturf over it, call it a day

Rent a small bobcat… and a 10yard waste bin. Possibly a concrete saw to score a few cuts…. Then the bobcat bucket blade should easily pry up and break it in to pieces! This would be a fun demo project!

    Perfect outdoor living space

Step 1: pick up the phone ☎️

    Step 2: call a contractor 🤳

Step 3: pay said contractor 💵

I’d leave it. You could put a pergola on it, a shed, sitting area, and the grandkids will want to play basketball I’m sure. I’m jealous you have it.

Build a pole barn right on top of it. You already got the floor poured for you. You just saved 20k and didn’t know it.
Edit nevermind it’s not concrete. You still saved money lol

Put pavers over it. Build an outdoor kitchen. Gazebo. Lots of good options with a solid base.

Unless you need more grass to cut, there’s so much you can do with it like that. Make a fire pit seating area on part of it. Add a Zen garden or raised planting bed next to it. How about an outdoor grill station or hot tub. A work shed? For the cost and hassle if digging it up, you could invest in making it fancy.
