Our front lawn is very shaded due to the large tree on our neighbours lawn. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what we can do instead of grass? The grass doesn’t grow because of all the shade and looks terrible right now.
I’m thinking of doing a mulch shade garden for a portion of the lawn closest to the house, but don’t know what to do for the rest of it. I don’t want anything that would take over my neighbour’s lawn as the two lawns are connected.
My husband and I are new to this whole landscaping and gardening world so any advice is greatly appreciated!
For context, we live in Toronto, Canada so get all four seasons. (Ignore the flagstone stacked on our lawn! We’re getting our path redone)

Here is a shade map so you can know the exposure for your yard.

My follow up question is do you want something pretty you don’t have to do maintenance on?
Do you want to grow food?
What animals/insects do you want to attract?
