Every year the local gang of pigeons strip my lilacs of leaves and leave them bear just after they flower. They’re starting again now and I’d like to try and do something to deter them whilst I still can.

I’ve looked and I don’t see any bugs they’re after. And there’s plenty of other feeders or foliage in the area that’s easy to get to.

Pigeons love buds and flowers. Before having cats we had several years of very little blossom on our cherry. The local pigeons would swarm it and eat all the buds.

My mum has an intact lilac for the first time in years after putting reflective windchimes in it

They are probably doing it for freedom, truth, justice and a hard boiled egg.

Either that or because lilac flowers do actually taste quite nice. The rest of the plant contains toxins though, so you have to know what you’re doing with them.

They like the shelter and the safety but also some of the leaves and flowers. They wont kill your tree though. You could plant a variety of plants such as a cherry tree or berry producing bushes to spread out the feeding for all birds.
