Thought this was interesting, my arborist sent me this screenshot of what Chip Drop looks like from their POV

Give a little bit of context… I haven’t heard of Chip drop as being a website, I’ve just requested one from a local tree trimmer and a week later I have a free giant pile of woodchips.

More people paying than I would have expected! I guess it probably depends on the area too

It won’t even let us tip in my area, so arborists don’t even bother 😣

My ChipDrop arrived early one morning already smoking & smelling like BBQ. By day 2.5 it was undeniably on fire inside (not steam, *fire*), so we frantically called the neighbor fireman. Dark brown toasted, disintegrated mulch is bad for many plants because of the alkalinity so it got trashed at our expense: $140 for 8 exhausting loads to the dump and probably that much $ in water fees so we didn’t burn our house down between loads.

HOWEVER. They are currently running a PBS ad spotlighting *only* the bad aspects of using ChipDrop (including a couple raking their own mulch fire) and they have won my heart back with that. ha ha, good ad, ChipDrop. I still need therapy, but good ad.

    I did pay the $20.

I paid the $20 bc I figured it would get me a better situation with the drop details, etc. My chips came in less than 24 hours and weren’t bad. There was a bit of that green/blue mold growing in part of the pile, which has spread bc it’s taking a while to move all the chips myself. But overall I’m not mad about it and would probably use it again if I need to.

I tipped, a company took the tip and didn’t deliver. Fortunately Chip Drop refunded the tip money in a week. Won’t try again

I figured it was only fair to cover their $20 fee, and I suspected it would accelerate delivery. In prior years I’ve gotten a free delivery and now two where I covered their fee. It was all good, but I think I did wait a little longer for the free one.

I usually offer at least 40. Only got one bite so far. Still cheaper than buying a load from the local tree guy ($120).

  9. I live on the way to the dump where they have to pay through the nose to drop chips, so mine always show up fast and free for me.

I definitely would try asking for it free before offering money.

ChipDrop used to be reliable, now half the tree companies in the area don’t use it, and I can’t figure out why. I got a good load once when I offered $60.

I renewed a Chipdrop request for about 9 months without response. Added $20 and had mulch a couple weeks later. I’ve heard the arborist has to pay the app a little for the drop, so covering that for them will get you much better odds.

I put in a free request and waited for months for it to get filled. My neighbor offered $20 and got their order filled immediately, so I also offered $20 and got my drop within 3 days. Honestly, $20 for a truckload of mulch is still an insanely good deal, and I’ve been very satisfied with the quality of wood chips and stumps I received.

The town next door to me dumps their wood chips on the side of the road across from the town garage. Huge pile. Sign next to it says FREE WOOD CHIPS FOR PUBLIC USE. You just have to go get as many or as few as you like. I took some bags and a shovel yesterday and filled my car.

Just don’t check ‘a few logs’ as being okay. I ended up with four logs that are the entire trunk of a damn tree 🥴
