I’m very inexperienced with plants and got it as a gift a few months ago. She seems very sad rn

it’s buried too deep. the petioles should be above the soil.

You should remove the soil that covers the petioles and the stem. If it becomes unstable, add a trellis or a pole to the back of it. Monsteras are climbers, so it would benefit it a lot.

Soil looks dense and compacted and the plant is buried in that pot. You need to amend your soil with perlite/orchid bark and repot without burying the petioles. These are tropical plants and require lots of light and humidity to thrive like they do in nature.

Like others mentioned, it’s buried too deep. I’d personally snap off the yellow leaves, then let it breath for up to an hour so the wounds can callus over to avoid rot. Then, replant it with the stem as straight as you can to guide future growth, and keep the base of the petioles above soil. (Nodes are ok to plant since that’s where new roots come from, but the petioles rot if they’re underground.) Monsteras like chunky soil that can breathe, and drain, so I’d recommend at least getting some more perlite mixed in, but you can also benefit from orchid bark/chips. Here’s a diagram to help you identify anatomy:

The stem is buried so it is rotting (or will be)/soffocating, so the leaves buried have stems that will be rotting, too. Quite simply without using fancy terms. Thats why the leaf yellowed. It can’t breathe! Do not bury green parts of a plant. At all. Only roots, but not aerial roots. But you can guide aerial roots to soil.

It needs a lot, for a start that soil is inadequate, you need a chunky soil mix thats well draining, and its buried too deep, youve buried the stem and base of the petioles (leaf stems), this will cause them to rot and die, also while you dont seem to have a very large plant just yet, based on those leaves, if its all one plant, then youve buried the whole stem, you’ll want to bury only up to just below the lowest leaf on the stem, and that might leave this looking a bit odd and lopsided, which runs the risk of falling over or breaking so you’ll want to get some form of support behind the stem, and tie it to the support, but only tie the thick stem, not the petioles, also monstera are tropical plants that love lots of light so get that baby near the sunniest window youve got, if you live in a warmer climate, put it outside while its warm and sunny, otherwise, brightest window possible and possibly add a grow light as well, very strong grow light, above the plant, not directly in front of the leaves, its not an interrogation. Best of luck and I hope your plant thrives, just be aware, if you take too good care of it, it will take over your house and possibly wish to devour your firstborn as payment
